Homemade Herbal Hot Cocoa!!

I love story time. I love story time even more with a GOOD cup of cocoa-a decadent one, snuggled up with my boys reading Christmas library books!  And, hey, it’s November already, so why not Christmas story books already right?!

I don’t really care for the pre-packaged hot cocoa mixes….I mean, if I’m going to make a treat for us, I want it to be healthy and not packed with sugar and other additives.  I want it to contain some “staying power”–I have boys which equals ALWAYS HUNGRY.  I also want it to taste amazing and to be relatively quick and easy to whip up!  Mixing the dry ingredients in a big quart jar, helps to makes this recipe quick and easy!  I have devised some ways to get protein and GOOD sources of healthy fat into them, which helps keep them out of the fridge for a minute or two hahahaha!!  Good fat nourishes the brain.  Grass fed butter for example is packed with ALA (alpha lipoic acid) which is antioxidant, and is a helper to our immune systems by fighting free radicals and inflammation.  It is high in vitamins A and D.  In fact, those with lactose intolerances may actually be able to tolerate grass-fed butter!  There are many benefits to consuming grass-fed butter over conventionally fed butter, or margarine.  So I know this can be a bit pricer, but it is one item I encourage splurging on.  It tastes SO good-especially in cocoa.  If you have never had a buttery cocoa you are in for a treat!

In this recipe you will notice I use Swerve sweetner.  It is because I am pretty opposed to sugar and I try to find healthier alternatives for us.  I do low carb because I’m keeping an eye on my blood sugars after having gestational diabetes.  I will insert my disclaimer here…this is in no way medical advice.  Talk with your doctor if you have gestational diabetes! 🙂  This doesn’t mean you need to do the same-please use the sweetner of your choice.  Raw honey can work, but you can’t put it in the dry mix.  You would need to add this with the milk when you are actually making.  Coconut sugar is delicious though, and can be added into the dry mix.

Cocoa is high in magnesium-which helps relax mind and body.  In a house of rowdy boys this is definitely a nutrient I try to get into them on a daily basis!  We have talked about some of the benefits of Maca Root in another post.  If you want to read about it’s amazing powers, go HERE.

Himalayan Salt is a good source of trace minerals, and it seems to really bring out the flavors!

For the milk I used this Suja Plant protein milk.  The protein source is pea protein.  This is the way I add some of that “staying power”.  This milk is at Costco right now.

I also used some coconut milk.  Coconut milk is another good source of fat, and it tastes delicious, although I would not recommend using JUST coconut milk.  I would cut it with something.  I’ve used unsweetened almond milk and unsweetened cashew milk and the results were also amazing!

A protein/good fat-packed, delicious, healthy herbal hot cocoa!

Ingredients
  • For the dry cocoa mix you will need a clean empty glass jar and lid.
  • Cocoa Mix:
  • 1.5 cups organic cocoa powder
  • 1.5 cups of sweetner-I used Swerve (low carb option) coconut sugar is also really good in this
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 3 T. Maca root powder
  • 1 tsp himalayan Salt
  • For the Hot Cocoa:
  • 10 cups of milk of choice. If you are going for a low carb cocoa, use an unsweetened nut milk like cashew or almond, or coconut milk I used Suja Plant protein milk, and coconut milk in this.
  • 2 TBSP Grass Fed butter
  • 5 TBSP cocoa mix
Directions
  • Step 1 In a quart sized canning jar, mix the cocoa powder, swerve or sweetner of your choice, maca root, and salt. Put the lid on and shake to mix.
  • Step 2 In a medium kettle over medium/high heat pour in the milk, butter, and cocoa mix.
  • Step 3 Heat through but do not boil.
  • Step 4 Pour into your favorite mugs! This recipe yields about 10 cups-but most mugs are bigger than 1 cup, so this will do about 5 mugs full.
  • Step 5 I top this with homemade whipped cream and a sprinkle of cocoa powder.
  • Step 6 Enjoy!!
